The genetic classification includes five types of jasper based on their formation. Jasper is found in loose volcanic tuffs, which are penetrated by silica-rich fluids and cemented with various minerals that give rise to a jasper color. Jasper was formed by metamorphic and metasomatic processes. There are several geological environments where jasper can be formed. The uncountable amount of jasper varieties, colors, textures, and combinations result from various conditions where jasper can be formed. The color of jasper is explained by the presence of iron oxides like hematite or limonite that create orangy-red colors of the stone. Cryptocrystalline means that mineral grains occur in tiny sizes, indistinguishable by the unaided eye. Jasper is made of cryptocrystalline quartz grains. Instead, jasper is an opaque gemstone that doesn’t transmit light even through the thin edges or chips of stone.ĭue to jasper opacity, it is easy to distinguish real jasper from fakes or other natural minerals (like agate or obsidian) that imitate jasper. Raw natural jasper from the seaside looks matte, but it can have a glassy luster after polishing. Jasper is an opaque, commonly red stone with intricate banded texture. Jasper is an opaque variety of chalcedony, which is cryptocrystalline quartz, where quartz grains are invisible with an unaided eye. It is familiar to many people, even if they don’t know it was jasper. Jasper is a widespread gemstone of reddish colors and tangled textures that can create even whole beaches. If you are interested in checking out the best books about rock and minerals identification you can find them by clicking here (Amazon link). What Does Jasper Look Like and How is Jasper Formed Let’s clarify what jasper is, identify its main substitutes, and define several steps on how to differentiate between them. Sometimes obsidian and marble can be sold like jasper. They are primarily other microcrystalline and cryptocrystalline quartz varieties like agate, quartzite, and onyx. The main issue with jasper is that it is commonly another natural material that can be traded under the name jasper. Real jasper is composed of tiny quartz grains, and that is why its hardness is 7 on the Mohs scale. The second distinctive feature is hardness. Real jasper is opaque and doesn’t transmit light. To identify real jasper, watch through it in the sun or kit with a flashlight. It is pervasive on a lake and river beads, and seasides. Most probably, you have already seen jasper. Jasper is one of the most widespread gemstones with some very distinct properties for identifying real stones. His pick: Quest Bar, White Chocolate Raspberry This protein bar fuels muscle recovery to help bring muscles back to life.ĭavid Flanigan, facility manager at Surprise I’m not much on protein bars, but this option is one I’ll reach for when I’m in a rush. His pick: Gatorade Whey Protein Bar, Chocolate Chip flavor It tastes great and is gluten free, nitrates-free, MSG-free and hormone free. This “no BS” kind of bar is good if you’re on the go or need a quick snack. Typically, I don’t eat many protein bars unless I’m short on time or need something quick. The benefit to me of this bar is the ambiguous amount of flavor it provides. For chocolate lovers, I think it gives you enough of that satisfaction while delivering that sweet and salty caramel taste as well. As it may not be what some would consider “healthy” it provides “hard gainers” with lots of calories in the right ratios. His pick: OhYeah!, Chocolate and Caramel flavor Wade Haras, facility manager at Old Town Scottsdale As a trainer I eat a lot of protein bars and buying them in bulk allows me to always have them on hand. It packs 21 grams of protein per bar and costs roughly a dollar a bar. They are extremely tasty while only containing 1g of sugar. On average, Quest bars are 3 grams of net carbs making it a good choice for just about anyone. No wonder its Quest’s best-selling flavor! I choose this bar because it falls into my belief system that we should be eating whole foods. Kyle Decker, facility manager at Arrowhead A lot of protein bars on the market are very dry and chalky, but this bar has the best flavor I have found that definitely takes care of my sweetness cravings. I love sweets and this has a feel of eating a candy bar. What really draws me to this bar is my sweet tooth. I like this bar as a quick go to meal/snack or after workout replacement due to the amount of protein and carbohydrates. His pick: Chef Robert Irvine’s FIT Crunch, Peanut Butter flavor Kyle Schneider, facility manager at Ahwatukee Take note the next time you’re in the market for a protein bar that tastes good and does the body good too! To use Cast to TV to stream your GNOME Shell desktop (version 3.34 or 3.36 only!) to a Chromecast, you'll need to install Cast to TV version 14 (or newer) and Cast to TV Desktop Add-on, install some GStreamer plugins, and tweak some PulseAudio settings. Looking forward to when they do optimize it and hopefully they can work out these issues with the ethernet adapter. This article explains how to use Cast to TV (and its helper add-on) to cast your GNOME Shell desktop to a Chromecast device, with sound, which works with both X11 and Wayland. It's one of the first things I messed around when when I got the CCwGTV since ordering it on launch-day, I'm pretty impressed considering it's not yet an optimized device and it's so affordable. Otherwise, it's been pretty great, even since launch. I also see a difference when gaming using Steam Link, so I unplug the cat 6 when gaming. When using it connected to ethernet & test the connection using Netflix -> Help -> Test Connection, I saturate the adapter's connection at nearly the full 100 mbps. I don't think it's an issue with the adapter. Using wifi it has no issue maxing out the Steam Link network test at 100 mbps. SO, when using the official Google ethernet adapter, Steam Link tops out at 35 mbps when testing the connection, even though both client & server are connected via ethernet. I have gigabit fiber at my house and everything is connected using gigabit ethernet and enterprise (UniFi) switches/APs. I know it's only 100mbps, but I care more about latency than top speed, and latency should always be better with wired vs. I came here to chime-in on some issues with the official Google Ethernet Adapter. What Merida truly loves is represented by what she does on her day off, which she spends riding through the glen on her horse, shooting her bow, climbing, and enjoying nature. It is never perfection Merida craves, but freedom. She explains that a princess “rises early, is compassionate, patient, cautious, clean, and above all, a princess strives for, well, perfection.” This expectation of perfection is contrasted sharply against Merida’s unruly hair and the things her mother scolds her for-her doodling, chortling, and dinner etiquette. The Queen outlines the traits her daughter must strive for, expectations which were undoubtedly imparted upon herself as a young girl. She is shown under the close guidance of her mother practicing careful pronunciation, learning the geography of her kingdom, and playing the lyre. Some years later, Merida grudgingly participates in the tasks expected of a princess, showing that her life's purpose has been dictated by her sex and status and with little regard for her interests or skills. The importance of legends in Brave is reminiscent of the heroic epics and Arthurian myths of medieval literature, and within this context Merida can be seen as the protagonist in a role that has often been masculine-dominated. King Fergus fights off the bear but loses a leg in the process, a story that becomes legend. This scene from Merida’s childhood also features the evil bear Mer’du, who attempts to attack the young Princess and her mother. The Queen (Emma Thompson), who has spent her life adhering to the expectations placed on royal women, chides her husband for this unladylike gift. Archery is Merida’s greatest joy and talent, although it is a sport associated with male medieval characters like Robin Hood rather than princesses. The film begins with a scene from Merida’s childhood-as a birthday gift, her father, King Fergus (Billy Connolly), presents her with a bow. The opening scene of Brave introduces several of the film's central themes-Merida as an active and therefore nontraditional princess, her family dynamic as a representation of, and challenge to, the gendered expectations of medieval Scotland, and the truths behind legends. Brave directly acknowledges strictly defined gender roles while also challenging them. Some critics have argued that Merida exhibits more agency than previous Disney princesses-her story, for example, does not involve being rescued by a prince (Nowlan and Finch, 127). One of the main differences between those films and Brave is the lack of a romantic interest for protagonist Princess Merida (Kelly Macdonald). Brave (2012), a Disney / Pixar animated film directed by Brenda Chapman and Mark Andrews, takes a semi-radical approach towards the depiction of gender roles, especially when compared to previous Disney animated princess tales. However, these first attempts were not successful it wasn’t until the arrival of the electric models that fonts with several character widths had a visible presence in typewriters. Dwiggins worked on the design of proportional type for Remington Rand. Cassandre and Imre Reiner designed two typefaces that included four different widths for the Olivetti Graphika. But even before the appearance of the IBM Selectric in 1961, manufacturers had already made a few trials for the use of proportional fonts in mechanical models. Proportional type was widely used in electric and electronic machines. The shiftless alphabets were mainly used for advertising, telegrams, and financial work and the italic and script faces were intended for informal documents like personal correspondence.Īd for the Olivetti Graphika, “the first manually operated standard typewriter with proportional spacing.” Source: The Economist, Nov. There were typefaces created for particular purposes, such as protective writing that perforated paper instead of inking it. Sans serif, script, and italic fonts were also included in early typewriter-font catalogs. This type style quickly spread, but it was not the only option available. The design of the characters and the printing differences among models were used back then for typewriting identification. Most companies had their own Pica typeface, a monospaced font that fit ten characters to the inch. The shiftless alphabet used in the first commercially manufactured typewriter was soon replaced by a slab-serif design, which would become the unofficial standard among manufacturers in the first half of the 20th century. In the course of the history of typewriters - roughly 100 years - the typefaces designed for the machine grew in number and evolved in shape. Can typewriter be considered a style? If so, what features define a typewriter typeface? To answer these questions, we need to consider two perspectives: the term’s historical origin and its current usage. Nowadays, we often see the word “typewriter” used as a qualifier for certain typefaces. However, there may be some confusion about the use of these two terms together. We all know what “typewriter” and “typeface” mean as separate concepts, so there’s no need to define them. Photos by María Ramos (bars and wheel) and Olivetti (ball). These were the three mechanisms used for printing type in typewriters. Type bars, golf ball, and daisy wheel for Olivetti typewriters. |
